kennen.

HAs a person who takes an interest in the country of Haiti and its political figures, I was very excited upon discovering
Aristide's "In the Parish of the Poor". This book, which includes a wonderful foreword by Amy Wilentz, contains all the intellect and
emotional fervor that makes Aristide the highly-respected individual that he is. The book is well-written and even contains some of Aristide's
sermons. I am in no means a supporter of Aristide; however, I must highly recommend this book to anyone. I have thoroughly enjoyed it..

After the Dance: A Walk Through Carnival in Jacmel
Renowned Haitian American writer Danticat left her homeland at age 12 without ever having been to Carnival, kept safely away by
her protective Baptist minister uncle. The frightening stories he told her aroused fears she still had to contend with when she returned to the
southern coastal town of Jacmel determined to finally experience this culturally defining event. As in her fiction, Danticat writes about her
odyssey with an admirable delicacy and meticulousness. She begins her mental and...

Haiti: Best nightmare on Earth:
Herbert Gold first travelled to Haiti 50 years before the publication of this volume. The journey was a turning-point in his life. Here, he

Running the Road to ABC
A poetic text charts the experiences of six children as they run through the Haitian countryside (``six days each week, forty
weeks each year, for seven years of their short lives'') on their way to and from school. Lauture (Father and Son, 1993, etc.) pens a lyric
evocation of childhood--or even...

Popo and Fifina: When Popo and Fifina was first published in 1932, it marked the beginning of a long and fruitful partnership
between Harlem Renaissance writers Langston Hughes and Arna Bontemps. Greeted with universal approval, and praised by the The New York Times for
its `simple home-like atmosphere', Popo and Fifina is the story of two small children who move from the Haitian countryside to a new house in a
town by the sea. Now, 60 years later, its natural appeal is enhanced by our awareness of its place in history. This story is not only a glimpse of
life and times long past but also stands as an early African-American classic and as a milestone in the history of literature for children.

Please Malese, K-Gr. 3. Tom Sawyer looks like a small-time operator compared to the Haitian trickster Malese. Not only does
Malese extract a new pair of shoes, a full bottle of rum, and a free ride home from his fellow villagers, he also convinces them he wants to stay
in lockup. Upon his quick release, Malese has his friends repair his house while he lies in a hammock, as "he had suffered enough."
Accompanied by his striped, green-eyed cat, Malese is an attractive, resourceful scamp, whose actions are...
